Sometimes we just play around in the pottery studio, looking for new ideas and shapes to work on and develop. When we make our pottery on the potter's wheel, we use a thrown clay pad or "chuck," made of stiff but still-damp clay, to attach our wooden discs, called "bats" to the potter's wheel. When the piece we are making is finished, we loosen the bat and lift the soft, sticky clay shape, attached to its bat, off the wheel. After a month or two, this clay chuck starts to dry out and lose its grip on the potter's wheel-head, so we scrape the old chuck off and throw a new one. Lately I have been saving these old battered chucks, lifting and supporting the edges with clay snakes, and making them into Bagel Plates. I just like them--they are certainly unique! You will see in the last two pictures two process photos showing me scraping an old chuck off the potter's wheel, and the damp-clay bagel plate on a bat with clay snakes lifting and supporting its edges to make the flat chuck into a plate with a raised rim. When this bagel plate was stiff, I cut the supporting clay snake rings in half and bonded them to the bottom of the plate to make the foot ring.

This Matt Blue/Tan Bagel Plate is holey, wrinkly, and irregularly shaped and will probably not be good for spaghetti sauce or a fried egg, but it would be great for serving a morning bagel, a lunchtime sandwich, or as a jewelry holder on your dresser top. It would certainly make a unique gift!
