ANTIQUE SHADOW BOX 1903 HAMILTON MFG. CO. TYPE SET DRAWER PRIMITIVE RUSTIC WOOD DISPLAY SHELF
MINIATURE DISPLAY CASE WITH 89 SECTIONS & CAST IRON HANDLE

A beautiful way to display and showcase your collection of tiny items. In a rich, steeped in history true antique. From 1903 till 1984 these drawers contained the letters that every, marriage licence, business licence, ballots, laws, library cards, deeds, and forms, you name it, were printed with.

If you consider that, paper ephemera connects to everything from birth certificates to report cards. The documents these draws helped produce were in the hands of everyone and are still in our lives today, and literally had a hand in creating the fabric of our history

What we have here is a signed antique typesetters drawer Mfg. in 1903 for The Boston City Printing Dept. The signature reads " THE HAMILTON MFG. Co. TWO RIVERS WIS." It also has this stamped on it, "NEW DEPARTURE PATENTED"
This drawer is awesome in that it has 89 compartments of multiple sizes. Overall this drawer measures 32-1/4 in. X 16-3/4 in. and 1-1/2 in. depth. The breakdown on the exact sizes and quantities of sections are as follows.

Dimensions are in inches and measured exact...

qty. 1 compartment with dimensions 6-5/16" by 2-5/16"
qty. 28 compartments with dimensions 3-1/8" by 1-1/4"
qty. 28 compartments with dimensions 2-1/8" by 1-1/8"
qty. 14 compartments with dimensions 4-3/16" by 2-5/16"
qty. 11 compartments with dimensions 4-3/16" by 1-1/8"
qty. 7 compartments with dimensions 2" by 1-1/4"

Based on research and inspection, this drawer is made up of three wood types, the frame is of Oak, the backing is of Yellow Select Pine 3 ply plywood, (select = no knots) , and the sectional divider grids are of Tulip wood.

This is an all solid wood antique drawer, over 100 years old. Not one of the more common ones from the 50-60-ies made with particle board backer. Other drawers with the metal front face and/or chrome handles are much newer and constructed of lesser materials.

These drawers are not all the same, each is unique, depending on what font they contained, each has seen different amounts of use. Drawers that held popular fonts in common point sizes will show heavier signs of use, which is a good thing if you want a drawer with loads of character, or you may want a drawer that shows less signs of use with a more new old stock feel to it. Either way I have many to choose from in three different styles. So feel free to contact me so I might be able to set up a personal listing for you.

This drawer is in great original shape being over 100 years old. It has tons of patina that add to its character, and pay homage to it's long historical life in the Boston City Printing Dept. I spent a few hours carefully loosening up the dust that had been built up in the corners over the years and then carefully vacuuming out the debris. The Tulip wood grid is good and solid, the sections are permanent.

I have many of these and in four different styles. Two different grid patterns in the same size as the rectangular model shown. A drawer with more square like dimensions at 22 by 17 inches. Lastly a drawer that is narrow that’s close to 4 inches deep with two rows or columns of sections, depending on how you hang it.
