Description

NOTE: This book has been sold but I keep it up so someone interested can find it (like you!) so that I can know to look for it specifically for them. Of course it won't be the same book but I am good at and love the hunt for books, and can likely find you another copy of that same edition or another beautiful edition of the same book. :) Don't ever hesitate to contact me on sold listings, that's why they are here!

---

This book is just unreal! I can't believe I found it. It was donated to the library I work at, and I'm allowed to look through the donations, and sometimes they seem pretty worthless -- like this one came in a grimy bag of children's books, and I only picked it up because it was in a folio case, thinking hmm, interesting enough, maybe it's a first edition.

Thing is, Dr Seuss first editions aren't that rare, since he came out with many of his works not long ago, and there were so many printed as he was such a popular author they are easy enough to find, so it's really just out of boredom that I even opened it.

THEN I turn to the page before the title page, instead of turning straight to the copyright page, because this was a title I hadn't heard of before. I'm not sure what I expected, but certainly not THIS.

THIS BOOK is enough to make me scream in all capital letters, but I'll try not to--reason being, it is signed by the man himself, Theodore Geisel, the late, great Doctor Seuss. Not only that, it is number 454 (written in his own hand!) of 500 specially bound and cased limited First Edition copies EVER PRINTED! That such a special piece of literature and literary history should fall into my lap on SUCH A SMALL CHANCE considering I could've overlooked it, as I almost didn't look in the bag at all, considering it was grimy looking. But it held this treasure inside like a pearl and I lucked into finding the right dirty clam. Unbelievable.

This book is one of the rarest of the rare, one of the only left of these 500 gems, and wherever the rest may be in the world, this one is available here for you! How lucky :)

And really, its amazing-ness and rarity cannot be overstated. I squeal every time I look at his signature. I'm looking at it again right now and squealing.

Not only is the book a rare copy, the story is not as well known as his many classics like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish or Horton Hears a Who or The Grinch or -- I could go on all day! This story is, then, special on top of its being signed and numbered of such a limited print run, because it is just as fun and enchanting as the rest of Seuss' works. I pictured some pages above, but here is the beginning to give you a taste:

"On the last day of summer,
ten hours before fall...
My grandfather took me
out to the Wall.

For a while he stood silent.
Then finally he said,
with a very sad shake
of his very old head,
"As you know, on this side of the Wall
we are Yooks.
On the far side of this Wall
live the Zooks.

Then my grandfather said,
'It's high time you knew
of the terrible horrible thing that Zooks do.
In every Zook house and in every Zook town
every Zook eats his bread
with the butter side down!'"

HOW DARE THEY, right? Ha! This book is a great lesson for children on what we get for fighting people for having different customs and views (ie nothing good) and how pointless it can be to fight over small things like which side of the toast you eat your butter on, for instance. The lessons in this book can be applied to many situations obviously and are characteristic of Dr. Seuss' genius in both rhyming and teaching. You'll laugh at the book with memories of your love of Dr Seuss when you were young, or you'll share this love with other young ones today, and it'll live on through you in these few collectible copies made especially so they would last this long time and be cherished for years to come.

And here's the straight information you may be looking for:

-Full title: The Butter Battle Book
-Author: Theodore Geisel, or as he is far and widely known, the great Doctor Seuss
-Format: Blue case and boards/binding, image impressed on front cover, spine has title and author's name in gold, endpapers illustrated with full bright colors of Zooks and Yooks marching with their butter flags into battle, every page illustrated in full-color, First Edition, Limited Edition, first page states: "Of the first edition of THE BUTTER BATTLE BOOK five hundred copies have been specially bound. These books are signed by the author and numbered 1 to 500." Then there is a line below where Seuss has written in "454" and below signed his name in his signature style with the looping underline :)
-Condition: Great as great can be! The only part that is somewhat dirtied from time is the one part that you'd expect to be, since its sole purpose is to protect the precious book inside: the folio case! The case is still sound however, not falling apart at all or written on or anything, it just looks a bit faded.
-Publisher: Random House Inc, New York
-Copyright: Dr Seuss and A S Geisel, 1984
-Date published: 1984
-Provenance: Described above. No idea who would donate such a treasure, however!
-Pricing: I priced this book based on the one other copy I could find, and this one is priced lower. I can't really say that I did anything else in the pricing because this truly is priceless to me, so I had to go off what I could find, and I could only find one, so there it is! Also I should say this listing is different in that it has many more pictures and details so you know what you are getting and that you can trust the product and the seller, too! :)

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
