Born in Indiana, Freddie Hubbard studied trumpet in High School, and later, at Jordan College. As a teenager, he played with other soon-to-be famous players Wes Montgomery and James Spaulding. He left school at age 20, headed for New York, and was soon playing with some of the city's most notable jazz players including Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Rollins, and Quincy Jones. He was quickly signed to Blue Note Records where he released his first album as a leader. That recording, "Open Sesame", featured Tina Brooks, McCoy Tyner, Sam Jones and Clifford Jarvis, under the supervision of legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. 10 years later, Hubbard had switched labels to CTI, where producer Creed Taylor helped him produce a series of records that are considered among his best work. This album is a follow-up to his highly successful album "Red Clay". Like that album, the record features a who's who of jazz musicians, including Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson. Also like Red Clay, this album has the same funk-jazz vibe, with occasional forays into atonal music. The title cut is an 18 minute masterpiece. with each player turning in stellar performances.

I've had this record since its release -- but I've taken excellent care of it. I'd rate it as "Near Mint" -- I just don't hear any serious flaws anywhere. The cover is excellent -- it looks like the shrink wrap fused to the cover and it's peeling off a bit. But otherwise, there's only a hint of wear. The original inner sleeve is dandy as well.

The first three albums Hubbard recorded on CTI - Red Clay, Straight Life and First Light - are considered to mark the peak of his career. Earlier work was less adventurous -- and some of his later albums have been criticized for being too commercial. For Freddie Hubbard fans, those three CTI albums are "must haves". I wish I still had my copies of Red Clay and First Light!

I rate each recording's quality only after carefully listening to the entire album.

Every LP has been lightly cleaned. All pictures of album covers in my listing are of the actual albums themselves.
