Description

This is a fabulous hat made by designer Tatiana of Saks Fifth Ave in the 1940's. It is made of black finely woven straw with a side bloom of white flower buds. The hat is fitted like a cloche and comes down on the right side. It measures 22.5" in circumference inside. The white flower buds are all intact and just beautiful!

The straw is in great condition! The design is wonderful! Flowers were a big influence in Tatiana's life, read below for more info.

She was an imperious fashion icon and the leading hat designer for Saks Fifth Avenue for 20 years from 1942-1963. She joined Saks Fifth Avenue after leaving Henri Bendel and became head of its custom hat salon, designing with the signature Tatiana du Plessix until its Salon Moderne closed.

Her designs were often praised by fashion reporters as irresistible. In 1950, Virginia Pope of The New York Times hailed the milliner as "a perfectionist" in assembling both materials and colors. She also praised her artful originality in flattering women of many types. The 1951 collection, Miss Pope wrote, excels in "both wit and wisdom."

Born Tatiana Yacovleff in St. Petersburg, Russia, on May 7, 1906, her professional family found sanctuary in Paris after the Bolshevik Revolution. She studied painting and sculpture, but also learned millinery to earn a living. Famous Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky fell in love with the 22 year old beauty at first sight in the fall of 1928. He sent her a bouquet of the most beautiful and unusual flowers a few times a week. The 37 year old poet died unexpectedly in 1930 but the flowers continued coming from a famous Parisian florist for another 15 years or so. During World War II in German-occupied Paris, Tatiana survived only because she was selling luxury bouquets on the boulevard. Mayakovsky’s flowers saved her from starvation. They say, the greatest love is stronger than death, but not everyone can make this statement real. Vladimir could.

Be reminded that this gorgeous hat, designer by her, is laden with beautiful flower buds.

Here is the designer's obituary:

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
Etsy direct checkout is preferred, Paypal, checks and money orders are also accepted. Personal checks are fine as long as you don't mind waiting until the funds clear. If a check's returned NSF, I'll ask you to cover the bank fee - it's only fair. Checks can be sent to:
incogneeto
30 Division St.,
Somerville, NJ
08876

If you're not using Paypal or Etsy instant payment, please let me know what alternate form of remittance you'll be using and when I can expect it.

Payment is expected within 3 days of sale date. I will place the item on reserve for you for that amount of time. I realize there may be emergencies that crop up; so if for some reason the 3 day grace period can't work for you, please contact me so we can make other suitable arrangements.

I also offer layaway or installment purchases on a case by case basis; so please ask. Terms are 20% down with 30 days to pay. If you do not pay within 30 days, I will remove your reserve and open the listing to other buyers. At that point, you forfeit your deposit.

Tax is collected for sales in NJ. Paypal automatically adds it to every purchase, so if your item is a non taxable item, I will be sure to refund those monies.

Returns & exchanges

Refunds are no longer accepted unless the item is grossly misrepresented or damaged in shipment. I go out of my way to include all measurements to assure a proper fit. It is the buyers responsibility to read the listing and ask questions if I am missing something.
If a refund is warranted, items must be returned promptly (within 3 days of receiving) and in the same condition as sent - I absolutely do not refund shipping expense. That money went to the post office, not in my pocket so I don't have it to give you!

I understand that clothing is a difficult piece of merchandise to buy online since you cannot feel the fabric, smell the presence or lack of odors, and most importantly, you cannot try the garment on for proper fit. Sure, I carefully measure & note actual measurements of the items in my listings, but that doesn't always do it. I ask my customers to compare measurements to an item of their own that fits. I also carefully disclose condition... but sometimes I miss a seam, or a loose hem stitch. This is to be expected of vintage. These items are old. I do however reserve the right to handle any dispute individually & will work with you to resolve a problem should one occur.

Prompt communication is the key to a good online experience. If I don't hear from you, I will assume our business has concluded.

Additional policies

We are pleased to announce that we have just opened a wholesale annex here on etsy as TRUEVINTAGEWHOLESALE, where we sell lots of vintage by the category. It's a slow start but I am putting new listings up daily. Please visit it here:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/TRUEVINTAGEWHOLESALE

Condition: My vintage clothing, jewelry & accessories are vintage and therefore not brand new. Please expect some age wear to vintage. I disclose all damages that are obvious, but please ask questions if you have a concern.

Requests: If I have what you're looking for (and I have A LOT!), I'll list it so we can keep Etsy one of the best online buying sites around!

International: International customers should note that occasionally your purchase may incur VAT or customs charges. As a buyer, it's your responsibility to be familiar with and pay any assessed duties based on your country of delivery.

Discounts: I believe I have my items priced fairly for the market. I have been selling vintage since 1986 and know what the going prices are. I wouldn't have been able to stay in business this long if I was over priced, especially during the recession! Therefore, I consider my prices to be firm. Prices reflect the time it takes to list, salary to my photographer and models, fees on etsy and paypal. However, there have been times when I will accept a reasonable discount offer. After all, I have coupon codes available for repeat customers.
