A very cool and vintage map of Cape Cod. Cape Cod, a hook-shaped peninsula of the U.S. state of Massachusetts, is a popular summertime destination. It's the site of quaint villages, seafood shacks, lighthouses, ponds and bay and ocean beaches. Most of Cape Cod's geological history involves the advance and retreat of the Laurentide ice sheet in the late Pleistocene geological era and the subsequent changes in sea level. Using radiocarbon dating techniques, researchers have determined that around 23,000 years ago, the ice sheet reached its maximum southward advance over North America, and then started to retreat. Many kettle ponds – clear, cold lakes – were formed and remain on Cape Cod as a result of the receding glacier. By about 18,000 years ago, the ice sheet had retreated past Cape Cod. By roughly 15,000 years ago, it had retreated past southern New England. When so much of Earth's water was locked up in massive ice sheets, the sea level was lower. Truro's bayside beaches used to be a petrified forest, before it became a beach.

Since 1914, Cape Cod has been separated from the mainland by the Cape Cod Canal. The canal cuts 17.5 miles (28.2 km) roughly across the base of the peninsula, though small portions of the Cape Cod towns of Bourne and Sandwich lie on the mainland side of the canal. Two highway bridges cross the Cape Cod Canal: the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight and limited passenger services onto the Cape. Cape territory is divided into fifteen towns with many villages. Cape Cod was a landmark for early explorers. It may have been the "Promontory of Vinland" mentioned by the Norse voyagers (985–1025). The Manomet River area (taken up by the western end of the Cape Cod Canal in the early 20th century) is claimed by some to have been visited by Leif Eiriksson, and a stone wall discovered in Provincetown in 1805 is also claimed to have been built by his younger brother Thorvald Eiriksson around 1007 AD. A very cool place....and a very cool map to go with it!

This is an amazing and exceptional Modern creation of a classroom wall map that was common in the early 1900s. Originally printed at the beginning of the 19th century, educational wall charts and maps were designed for classroom use. They were first made in small format and depicted simple scenes and scientific items that were used for primary school instruction. Around 1880 wall charts/maps were produced and sold in larger quantities not only for primary schools but also for higher education institutions. With the introduction of lithography in the late 1700's, it became possible to produce larger color prints at a affordable price.

Larger wall charts and maps images could be viewed from almost every corner of the classroom and became popular with instructors. With the advent of our modern technology in the late 1960's, most of the charts and maps were replaced. The majority of these charts were destroyed and the few originals that have survived have become almost prohibitive to purchase.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>***<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

We have researched and studied the roll up maps and charts of yesteryear. This endeavor now allows us here at WaterColorMaps to offer you amazing period reproductions that are constructed the same way as the original were 150 years ago.

WOODEN HANGING MAP-this map is mounted on two vintage wooden bars colored with our own custom stains. This allows some of the wood grain to show through the hanging bars. Each hanging map includes a cast iron hanger, brass name plate and cotton cord. It arrives to you ready to display on your wall.

PULLDOWN MAP ON ROLLER- this map mounted on a vintage wooden spring roller like the maps of the 1920s. Each Roller map is built to exact specifications for the map you ordered. Period hardware and screws are used. We also will include the 8" iron hooks and all the iron rings to hang your map. Each map will come with pull down handles mounted to the bottom of the map, brass name plate and screws for mounting your map.

**We use vintage and period style hardware that was created from the original casts of the actual hardware. We custom import these hard to find items into the U.S. from a small specialty manufacture from Dongshancun. Our iron rings and hangers are created by craftsman in India.

**Our wood is milled to the same specifications as the original wall hangings from 1905. We also try to use reclaimed oak and pine when possible on our products, though some current milled lumber must be used at times.

**The woods are recolored with a custom made milk stain that is period specific and it allows the grain to show though the coloring. The finished product looks like it has been around a long time

**The images are printed on archival cotton canvas. This is a non-glare type of material that is used in most of the major museums such as the Smithsonian and the Met. It has the benefit of being very durable, does not reflect glare from overhead/side lighting, and prints period specific....allowing age and vintage ware to show though. These prints are vintage looking and are hard to distinguish from the original maps!

***EACH print includes a vintage Cast Iron hanging ring that can be mounted into any wall. It makes the hanging of these maps easy and period appropriate.
