Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.72 Inches; Pendant width: 0.37 Inches

This pendant combines two of our favorite stones: a light purple pink rose de France amethyst and a carved tiger eye wing. The amethyst measures 7.7 mm in diameter and weighs in at 1.5 ct. The tigereye wing measures 0.71 x 0.39 inches (18.0 x 9.9 mm) and weighs in at 5.0 ct.

These two stones are both varieties of the gem quartz: purple-pink amethyst and golden tigereye. Quartz is one of the most familiar of minerals. Its most common varieties, colorless rock crystal and white opaque milky quartz are well known as common rocks found in most parts of the world. It can also form a very wide variety of gem materials.

Purple amethyst is probably the most famous, and has been highly valued throughout history, and at one point was even considered a precious gem like emeralds or rubies. It was thought in antiquity to counteract drunkenness, and was thus favored for drinking glasses and also for rings worn by clergy through the middle ages. In color it ranges from pale purple or purple-pink all the way to near-black in darkness. This top stone is a great example, with a light purple-pink color often referred to as rose de France.

Below it is a beautiful wing carving in tigereye. Tiger-eye is a fascinating stone formed by the intergrowth of quartz and a fibrous mineral known as crodicolite. For a long period it was considered rare and very valuable, until extensive deposits discovered in Africa drove the price down. It is still, however, a fantastic material which occasionally produces incredible gemstones. This stone is a great example, nicely carved into a wing with beautiful golden sheen that complements the purple of the amethyst above it.
