Antique Large Brass Kettle with Handle Apple Butter Pail Fireplace Cooking Kettle 1850s C812J

Description

We have a wonderful large antique brass kettle with handle from the 1850's. The oval mark stamped into the bottom of the pail reads "HIRAM W HAYDEN WATERBURY CONN PATENTED DEC 16 1851".

Designed for use as an apple butter pail or cooking kettle, this beautiful brass bucket is 11 inches across the top rim, 7 inches deep and 9 inches in diameter at the base. It has an iron handle looped through brass ears that are riveted to the side of the pail with copper rivets. The rim of the pail is rolled "over a thick iron band made of stock similar to the handle". The bottom is slightly rounded, indicating its use as a fireplace kettle.

"The pail is seamless and was produced using Hayden's patented method and spun from a single sheet of brass. There are fine horizontal striations along its sides from the spinning the brass to form it and these add a primitive charm to the brass ware."

"Hayden's patent was issued in 1851 and was given for his adaptation to brass of a method developed by others years earlier for spinning pewter objects. Sheet brass is a much harder metal to spin and Hayden developed some machines and tools that made working sheet brass much easier. Hayden's method was granted a patented on December 16, 1851 under US Patent #8389 and this date was stamped on Hayden's pails (kettles) for many years." (thanks to Ruby Lane for a wealth of information: https://www.rubylane.com/item/287127-RL615x2ea1393/1850s-Large-17-inch-American-Brass)

Our kettle is in very good condition, with some surface oxidation inside (where the apple butter simmered and thickened, no doubt) and expected scratching to the outside, but there are no holes, worn spots, or breaks. This is a large, sturdy, still functional brass cooking kettle.
