Description

Presented here is an absolutely fabulous vintage 1940 - early 1950s Elgin American carryall case.

Done in a gold tone finish, this elegant Post Deco case is relief of leaping gazelles and ferns, on both the front and back.

Referred to as an "All-In-One Carryall", this case, when opened, one can see on one side a hinged mirror with release clip, which opens to reveal a cigarette compartment next to it is a tissue/money clip. On the other side ... an embossed and signed compartment contains powder, powder screen, and powder puff marked ELGIN AMERICAN on silk ribbon. Next to this compartment is a smaller compartment for coins, matches, pills, or keys. The last compartment holds the lipstick.

This carryall/compact then slips into its original black satin moiré case with red interior, and wrist band, The sides of this case are open so the pattern of gold leaping gazelles shows through.

In the 1930s, women who traveled in the same social circles, needed several evening gowns and matching accessories. To solve the problem, the minaudiere was introduced ... a rigid metal box-shaped evening bag with compartments for everything a lady would need for the evening!

~ MEASUREMENT: Carryall - 2-5/8" wide x 4-1/4" long x 1-1/2" deep. Black fabric case - 3" wide x 4-3/4 long x 1-3/8" deep. Satin wrist band is 9" long and snaps in place on one side.

~ CONDITION: The exterior of the gold carryall is beautiful! It has actually been used so there a few little things on the interior ... the tiny button clasp, which holds the mirror closed is missing, but the mirror hinge has a very tight spring to hold the compartment closed, and the mirror is perfect.

~ SIGNED: ELGIN AMERICAN ! MADE USA on powder lid

There is still a residue of actual powder in the powder compartment, and the sifter is intact. The little square powder puff front has separated from its back, but all sections are there.

There are a couple of tiny, tiny age spots within the gazelle/fern pattern on the coin compartment. Whether you see them, just depends on how you turn in the light!

The lipstick case works perfectly. It did have lipstick in it at one time. There are a few very tiny use marks on the case, but nothing that stands out, and the compartment clasp holds the lipstick tube securely in place.

All of the above issues are on the inside and minimal. None take away from the overall viewing beauty of this elegant case!

The outer moiré carrying wrist case, overall, is in beautiful condition. The fabric is secure and has no splits or tearing. Due to age and use, there is small wear at the bottom corners. They could, actually, if you are so inclined ... be carefully filled in with a very fine black marking pen.

This one of the best and most elegant of carryalls, and will be a wonderful addition to any collection!

This is a book piece and can be seen in Laura Mueller's book "Compacts Carryalls & Face Powder Boxes"
