Some uses for this medicinal quality herb include:
sachets
potpourris
perfumery
soapmaking
crafts
healing preparations

Orris root is one of the oldest known perfumery and herbal ingredients. Mentioned by authors in antiquity, it was a staple up until this century as a fixative for scent. Made from the root of an iris, it has a subtle violet aroma and was used to isolate the first synthetic violet scent in modern perfumery. Today it is mostly known for its ability to retain fragrance in potpourris and much harder to find. However, it is truly a necessity in any superior cosmetic herbery. I use it in so many of my preparations!

It is the cut root, rather than the powder, that I recommend for pillows, sachets, and other crafts where a fine powder would sift through fabric or be less pleasing to the eye than whole herbs.

For hair, perfume, or dry cleaning powders, please note the already powdered orris root:

"Diuretic, stomachic. Orris root is a good diuretic which is useful for dropsy and other water retention problems. It is also used sometimes for bronchitis, coughs, and sore throat; for colic; and for congestion in the liver." http://www.herbies-herbs.com/pages/herbuses-4.html

"Orris Root Powder uses include diuretic, bronchitis, coughs, sore throat, physical and spiritual protection, bring love, romance, companionship and a loving mate, attract money, dreams, and divination." http://www.themagickmoon.com/orris-root-powder.html

"A Moon plant, orris root is good for digging deep into the Moon-ruled subconscious and uprooting what is hidden. Like any Moon herb, it can also be used in divination and dreamwork. The iris is also called the fleur-de-lis, so this Moon plant has often been associated with dominion and war, which gives it a nice protective aspect. Some consider orris root a Venus herb. It is definitely widely used for love magick, and in Hoodoo is known as Love Drawing Herb (and Queen Elizabeth root). The powder form is blown onto clothes, sheets, and so forth to make sure that the owner returns one's love." http://www.alchemy-works.com/herb_orris_root.html
