Description

# 17-300

Antique Kodak No 4 Cartridge camera made in the 1900 to 1903 period. Designed to take 5x4 inch pictures on No 104 roll film. The camera design also provided for use of glass negatives with the use of a special back that would fit onto the camera back in place of the back cover. The camera has red leather bellows with leather that became available from Russia in 1897 or thereabouts. It was produced by a special chromium tanning process that was phased out of use after 1913 when bellows began to be made from black European or American leather.

In good condition cosmetically considering it's age. The leather was treated with Lexol to restore some life to it and then polished with black wax shoe polish to restore some of the wax to the leather. There are a few minor scrapes as can be seen in the pictures and a few small missing pieces at bottom hinge area of the bed door. The bed latch was missing when the camera was obtained so a replacement push pin was made from a copper rivet and covered with new leather cover patch, the inner latch spring tab needs re-bending, but works okay if the bed is positioned just so by turning the bed extension knob on the side. The shutter is 90mechanically functional. The mechanical adjustments of the front standard are stiff but moveable. The red bellows in good, light-tight condition.

A very nice collectible camera for collection or display. Not too common as only 90,000 of the No 4's Vintage were made during the 10-year manufacturing period from 1897 to 1907. Have no data on yearly production, but would guess this camera is one of maybe 20-30,000 made during the 1900 to 1903 period.

Size is 8 1/4 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches high by 3 3/8 inches deep in closed configuration.
