Description

Exquisite antique English gentleman's George III memorial ring, circa 1815, in 18K rose gold with a braided hair compartment within a French jet hoop surround, a split shank and a further French jet set band. The hair is protected by a rock crystal glass pane.

Engraved inside with 'Stephen Willcock Esq., Ob 11 Feb 1815 aet 49. (Stephen Willcock Esquire died 11th February aged 49). Esquire is a British term that was used to denote a member of the gentry (English aristocracy) or a commoner who had risen to the position of a gentleman. Stephen was laid to rest in the cemetery at St Marys, Bideford, Devonshire.

Mourning rings were traditionally given to family members and close friends and were often paid for by the deceased estate. This beautiful example was possibly given to a male friend or family member because it is a large size on a grand scale, measuring at US size 9.5 or UK S. Comes with this blue velvet vintage ring box. Fabulous, unique antique ring and highly desirable!

Materials: 18K (18 carat) Rose Gold - acid & electronically tested.
Gemstones: French Jet (Glass/Paste)
Ring Size: 9.5 US/ S U.K.
Measurements: 1" east to west. 1-1/8" north to south. Central oval panel 5/8" wide and high. Back band 5mm wide
Weight: 7.4 grams
Condition: Over 200 years old, the ring is in superb condition especially given great age. There are a few tiny fleabites to the French jet stones in places. The hair is still tightly plaited and is dark blonde with flecks of grey.
