Description

Hello:

This is the Royal Copenhagen 1968 annual Christmas plate. It features a husky dog watching people on a Umiak boat on the water with mountains looming in the background. The plate title is "The Last Umiak".

The Umiak is an old Greenlandic type boat. Umiaks had a wood frame of whalebone or driftwood covered by animal skins of walrus or seal skins. Such boats were used by Eskimo people who moved into fiords in summer to catch fish and seals. At night the boats were turned upside down and people slept under them. The boats could be as long as 60 feet and held 30 passengers. Yet, they were light in weight enabling them to be carried over ice. The sledge (sled) dog is still used in Greenland to pull their sledges since other forms of transport are hard to use in ice and snow. The boats were used from Siberia to Greenland. Greenland was a Danish colony at one time, but is now autonomous.

The plate is 7 inches in diameter and is in mint condition. A pine cone border surrounds the plate and a Christmas star is at the center top. The glossy finish on the cobalt blue Copenhagen plates is so beautiful. Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775. The plates are made and painted entirely by hand. The company is known for its quality porcelain.
