Gallbladder

The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. This concentrated bile, in turn, is released into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) when fatty substances enter the duodenum from the stomach. The bile helps emulsify the fatty substances within the small intestine, enhancing their absorption through the intestinal lining. The epithelium of the inner lining of the gallbladder, visible in this image, is made up of tall columnar cells. These cells concentrate the bile by removing salts and water from the bile.
