Colon

The colon forms the bulk of the large intestine. It has three parts: ascending, transverse, and descending colon. The descending colon is continuous with the rectum. This horizontal section through the mucosa (inner lining) of the colon reveals numerous round ‘daisy-like’ glands. The cells in these glands help to absorb water from the fecal material and also produce mucus that helps ease the movement of the dehydrated fecal material through the large intestine.
