Compact Bone

Bone is a specialized connective tissue that forms the bulk of our skeleton, serves to protect many of our internal organs, and is a major storage site for much of the body’s calcium and phosphorus. It is a dynamic living tissue that is constantly being remodeled. The 3 major cell types found in bone are called osteoblasts (the cells that form bone), osteocytes (the cells that get trapped in the bony substance but help maintain it in a healthy state) and osteoclasts (the cells that resorb bone). A fine balance between osteoblast deposition of bone and osteoclast resorption of bone permits bone to be remodeled and renewed. Compact bone has numerous Haversian systems (osteons) where the bony material is laid down in concentric rings (lamellae) around bundles of arteries, veins, and nerves.
