Description

Othello is a simple game of strategy and a little luck. It is very easy to learn.

I made this game from a thin piece of plywood. I framed it with 1” x 2” white pine. All the pieces were glued together and stained a light brown color once the glue dried. A few days later I painted it with a Spar urethane clear coat to beautify it and make it more durable. A black Sharpie marker was used to draw the 64 square grid playing surface.

The playing pieces are small blocks of poplar, stained and painted with a clear coat the same as what was used on the game board. Six different happy face stickers were applied to each block after the clear coat was thoroughly dried. The traditional game uses white and black discs. The game I made here uses cubes, each side of which has one of the 6 different happy faces on it. This feature makes the game more interesting and personal, though a little harder to play. Apparently discs are easier to flip than cubes.

The game board is 10” x 10” x 1-1/2”. The cubes are a little less than ¾” on all sides. Othello is a very easy game to learn and only requires as much thinking and strategy as you want to put into it. Rules can be found on the internet but the basic object of the game is to have more squares on the grid displaying your face than your opponent does his. There is an element of chance, or luck, in it in that you and your opponent may not see the best move during your turns. It’s a fun game to play while having a conversation with a good friend.
