ALTERATIONS
Keep note of the purpose and fabric this pattern was designed for. Customize the block to your measurements, and perhaps adjust the pattern for a more petite or tall frame. Use the helplines on the pattern to make needed alterations and add your preferred seam allowance. The pattern comes with instructions to blend sizes and adjust measurements.
Experience or an understanding of making patterns, additional pieces (like lining & facing) & alterations is required. If you are familiar with graphic design software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW you can open the A0 PDF in that software and alter, blend sizes or redesign the pattern digitally.
Make a toile!
The most important step is to fit the pattern by making a toile (a mock up / test garment/ muslin) ‘before’ you start making any design changes. NOËLNOVA blocks patterns are designed with all kinds of shapes and sizes in mind, but you have to test the fit like any other ready-made garment you buy from a store. Often alterations still need to be made. That’s why it’s essential to test the pattern by making a mock up with similar fabric to the one you intend to use for your actual design. Mark on the toile where adjustments need to be made and apply those changes to your block.
Create your own design
When you have your block customized to your requirements, overlay and trace a new copy (on paper or digitally) to begin transforming the block into your design. Pattern adaptations are done by cutting (‘slashing’ parts for decorative seams, creating fullness, reducing fullness), or by manipulating / repositioning darts. You can also leave the pattern as it is and make a minimalistic style garment. Check the NOËLNOVA youtube channel for cutting and slashing tutorials at 👉 www.etsy.com/listing/fBE36.
