Albatross in Flight, by Caren Loebel-Fried, is a limited edition fine art print from an original hand-pulled, hand-colored block print. The materials used in this museum quality print are all of the highest quality, printed on acid-free, 100% cotton paper, with archival, pigment-based inks. The art comes inside a resealable poli bag, with an acid-free backing board, description, and certificate of authenticity.

Pictured here is a Laysan Albatross, returning to its nest after feeding on the surface of the ocean. The chick who waits impatiently for a meal will receive regurgitated oil from squids, crustaceans, and flying fish roe. Albatrosses are famous for their beautiful, boisterous courtship dance. Laysan Albatrosses are about 32 inches in length with a wing span of up to 6.7 feet! On these long, thin wings, albatrosses rely mostly on wind and have adapted to use “dynamic soaring” rather than constant flapping, to cover enormous distances over the ocean with seemingly no effort, often through storms. Albatrosses can live for more than 60 years and mate with one partner for life, choosing another partner if the first dies. Seventy-one percent of the world population of Laysan Albatrosses nest on Midway Atoll. Other nesting locations are on islands and atolls throughout the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and a few places on the Main Hawaiian Islands, including Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kauaʻi, and Kaʻena Point Natural Area Reserve and James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge on Oʻahu. There are many threats to the survival of albatrosses. With warming oceans causing rising sea levels and sea surge during storms, albatrosses and other seabirds that nest on low lying atolls are threatened. The higher ground of the Main Hawaiian Islands could become crucial to the survival of these birds as nesting habitat. But, the Main Hawaiian Island are inhabited by humans who bring introduced animals such as cats, rats, and mice who predate upon the eggs, chicks, and even adult birds as they sit protectively on their ground nests. Work is being done to protect nesting albatrosses in some of the nesting places on the Main Hawaiian Islands, such as installing predator-proof fences. Other threats to albatrosses include marine debris. Sadly, floating plastic and other human garbage is sometimes eaten by the adults and fed to the chicks.

Caren learned the ancient art of block printing from her mother. She volunteers and researches on Midway Atoll, Kīlauea Point, and other wild places around the Hawaiian Islands. Caren creates art for many organizations, supporting the work they do on behalf of wildlife, conservation, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian Culture. Caren’s award winning illustrated books include Manu, the Boy Who Loved Birds, A Perfect Day for an Albatross, Naupaka, Lono and the Magical Land Beneath the Sea, Hawaiian Legends of Dreams, Hawaiian Legends of the Guardian Spirits, Pua Polu, the Pretty Blue Hawaiian Flower, Tree of Souls, and Legend of the Gourd.

Ordered four prints including Midway and Alala Love - I have both of them as jigsaw puzzles and had to get the prints :-) Quick shipping and very well packaged up - Caren included a free extra as thanks which was totally unexpected. Beautiful artwork - now I have to visit another favorite Etsy store to get frames made!

Very happy to have found Caren’s work on Etsy! I have always loved her note cards and thought they were only available at the Volcano Art Center Gallery on Hawai’i Island. Now I don’t ever have to wait until my next trip to purchase! She shipped my order quickly with a lovely personalized note and even included extra note cards 🥰
