It was a rough pebble and concrete patio. The flat kind, with no adornment, right outside the kitchen sliding glass doors, where I learned to roller skate. In a pair of skates just like these. In 1975. As expected, it took quite a few attempts, and most of a box of bandaids before I could stay upright. But while I was trying over and over, my mom and dad would read me this book. Try Again Sally.

The rest of my life, I've used that line, try again Sally, whenever anything takes many attempts. But as much as I loved those old metal skates, the best ones came for Christmas about three years later. THEY were gold glitter. Wish I still had those. Xanadu, man.
