Description

This is a wonderful hardcover copy of Gypsies. Wanderers of the World by Burt McDowell, National Geographic Society, 1970. Foreword written by Clifford Lee.

The Foreword reads: "I AM A GYPSY born in a caravan. This book tells much about me and my people and about a long journey I made to India, that fabulous land where my forebears originated. I had always known that someday I would make this trip. We call it "Dukkeripen" - saying the future.

But I confess I did not recognize that future one summer day when a tall American stranger came to my home. He introduced himself as Bart McDowell, and in this book he reports what Happened."

Bart was a Veteran having served as an officer in the Navy during WWI .He was an award-winning writer and senior editor at National Geographic magazine in Washington for 32 years. McDowell also wrote over two dozen articles and several books. he worked on six dozen continents and over five dozen countries

Mr. McDowell worked on six continents and over five dozen countries. All of the Rom they met along the way had "the same problem with those gorgios--non-Gypsies--who want to force their ways upon us without realizing that we want no such thing, and with self-styled 'experts' who so often portray us either as happy children of nature... or as thieves menacing society." Says Lee, Bart McDowell let the Rom speak for themselves.

Book measures 10-1/4" by 7" and has 215 numbered pages which include Index. Dust jacket shows some wear but still good condition. The cover of the book itself is a beautiful deep blue embossed cloth cover with beautiful glossy pictures, and a beautiful story as well.
