The story behind these tile jars and vases is that after my second daughter was born I still needed something artistic to do but it had to be while I was sitting stationary because did spend a lot of time sleeping on my lap. I stared working with silver clay jewelry. I love ocean creatures so I made little relief pieces of these animals that I then cut in small tiles and mounted on clear acrylic so the silver tiles looked like they were floating on your neck. After looking at these pieces for a while I kept thinking that the tile effect would look cool on a ceramic piece. Again thanks to finding photo resin for polymer stamps I was able to create stamps for clay using the sea imagery I love broken up by the grid.

This vase measures 7 1/2" tall by 5" wide. The interior is glazed in a food safe gloss white. The image is a splayed out spearing mantis shrimp (if you have never heard of these creatures look them up, they are really cool!). Toward the bottom is a small impression of the "ceramicgoddess", my personal marking.

Crystalline glazing ceramics is a very involved process. The flower like appearance of the glaze is actually zinc crystals that grow in the glaze during a slow controlled cooling after the peak temperature is reached. The glaze is very fluid and tends to run of the pot so a catcher is also thrown and fired under the piece to catch the run off glaze. The catcher is then separated and the bottom is ground down if there are any sharp edges or uneven glaze pools. Since the process is so involved there is a lot that can go wrong, so each successful piece is precious and completely unique.

Dishwasher and microwave safe. Interior is food safe.
