Description

Flying Geese Strip Quilt is lovely with wonderful 19th century fabrics in flying geese strips which alternate with solid turkey red strips. It was probably made in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The quilt measures 64 inches by 82 inches and fits best on a twin size bed. It is hand quilted in straight diagonal rows across the entire quilt in black quilting thread. The quilting stitches are not the tiny, precise stitches such as those found in quilts that were made to show off the quilt maker's skill. This was a quilt made to keep a loved one warm in the winter and the hand quilting reflects that. The backing fabric is an absolutely fabulous mourning print fabric of grey and black. The front and back of the quilt are both folded inward and machine stitched at the very edge to form an envelope-style binding.

The first photo shows the quilt hanging outside in natural light. The quilt is very uniform in color with the solid turkey red being very rich and saturated in color. The second photo shows the quilt on a full size bed. The quilt is hanging over one side of the bed, but the opposite side of the quilt does not cover the full width of the mattress. You can see the diagonal lines of hand quilting across the surface of the quilt. The stitches are in black thread. The third and fourth photos each show a small portion of the flying geese strips. Some of the fabrics in the flying geese are representative of print styles from the mid-1800s, but other fabrics are more typical of those popular at the end of the century. The fifth photo is a closer look at the flying geese strips and the surrounding solid turkey red strips. In this shot the hand quilting stitches are better seen. The sixth and seventh photos show the quilt folded to show the wonderful mourning print used for the back. The eighth photo is a closeup of the mourning print back. This print is absolutely fabulous and is in perfect condition. The final photo shows that the quilting and the batting do not extend all the way to the edges of the quilt. The medium weight cotton batting inside the quilt stops between an inch and two inches from the edges. The black quilting stitches also do not extend to the outer edges of the quilt. This quilt was made to be used and the stitches were probably done quickly, as has always been expected for utility quilts.

This quilt has no holes, rips, or stains. It will bring years of comfort to its new owner. It will fit nicely on a twin size bed, or it will be great draped on a sofa, chair, or cabinet door. It will also be very nice folded and put at the foot of any bed.
