The Passion Play at Ober-Ammergau by Lady Isabel Burton
Edited by W. H. Wilkins
Isabel, Lady Burton (nee Arundell) was the wife of explorer and writer Sir Richard Francis Burton, who translated Karma Sutra, the Perfume Garden and Thousand and One Nights. She accompanied her husband on his travels and took notes and wrote herself. Ober-Ammergau is a village in Bavaria, Germany, where a passion play (play about the passion and crucifixion of Christ in Christian beliefs) is performed every year ending in zero, and has been since 1634. Villagers are said to have vowed to God that they would forever after perform a play depicting the life and death of Jesus, if spared from the bubonic plague which was ravaging the region. The next scheduled performance of the play is 2020. This is Lady Burton's account of her experiences there. First edition in good condition. See photos.
