Description

This is a tooled leather briefcase with the elevated sculptures of the Aztec Sun Stone on one side and the Aztec Pyramid of the Sun Temple on the opposite side. See below for more information about these ancient artifacts.

This case has a wrap around zipper closure. The interior has two full length leather slip pockets for storing documents along with a large pouch and an ID or business card holder. the handles are retractable..

Dimensions:

Length: 15.75 inches
Height: 10 inches
Width: 2.75 inches

Condition:

This bag is in very good condition. It has no rips, tears or holes. The hardware functions fine and the bag is structurally sound. However, the leather on the retractable handles is peeling a bit and, like most vintage bags this age it has some scuffs and scratches. Please see

The neatest thing about this bag are the 3 dimensional elevated tooled engravings of the Aztec Sun Stone on one side and (what I believe) is the peak of the Pyramid of the Sun Temple at Teotihuacán on the other side.

Aztec Sun Stone:

According to Wikipedia, the Sun Stone is also known as the Stone of the Five Eras and, sometimes (erroneously) called the Aztec calendar stone. The Sun Stone is a late post-classic Mexica sculpture housed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, and is perhaps the most famous work of Aztec sculpture. It was originally discovered after the Spanish conquest but buried and lost. It was rediscovered on December 17, 1790 during repairs on the Mexico City Cathedral and mounted on a wall of the Cathedral, where it remained until 1885. Most scholars think that the stone was carved some time between 1502 and 1521, though some believe that it is several decades older.

Pyramid of the Sun Temple:

The Pyramid of the Sun is the largest building in Teotihuacan, believed to have been constructed about 200 CE, and one of the largest in Mesoamerica. Found along the Avenue of the Dead, in between the Pyramid of the Moon and the Ciudadela, and in the shadow of the massive mountain Cerro Gordo, the pyramid is part of a large complex in the heart of the city. The name Pyramid of the Sun comes from the Aztecs, who visited the city of Teotihuacan centuries after it was abandoned; the name given to the pyramid by the Teotihuacanos is unknown. It was constructed in two phases. The first construction stage, around 100 CE, brought the pyramid to nearly the size it is today. The second round of construction resulted in its completed size of 224.942 meters (738 feet) across and 75 meters (246 feet) high, making it the third largest pyramid in the world, though still just over half the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza (146 metres). The second phase also saw the construction of an altar atop of the pyramid which has not survived into modern times. For more about this see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_of_the_Sun

The pyramid projects in a manner that makes you think it will take off. Maybe so, there are some who believe the pyramids at Teotihuacán were built by ancient aliens: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/travel-interests/arts-and-culture/ancient-sites-built-by-aliens/

While the sun stone and pyramid are hundreds to thousands of years old, this bag is much newer but I have been unable to discover the date it was manufactured.

About Tooled Leather:

There are a lot of bags out there that are referred to as tooled leather bags. Most traditional manufacturers did not market tooled leather bags.

Tooled Leather is leather that has been worked on with leather tools to carve in a design, pattern, initials or other image for the purpose of decorating the bag.

Tandy Leather Company, which specializes in marketing tooled leather products, says on its website that tooled leather goes way back to the Middle Ages and the process of tooling leather was a closely guarded secret kept among Leather Guildsmen who handed it down from father to son who limited their tooling to basic geometric designs. However, when Cortez conquered Mexico in the 16th century Spanish leather craftsmen learned from those they conquered and expanded frin geometric designs to other patterns like flowers and animals. This item was shipped off extremely quickly and arrived fairly quickly, even though it had to go through customs. The bag itself was described correctly in terms of condition, the only critique I might have is that perhaps a better resolution image might be more helpful, I wondered if the photo quality was just an etsy issue but I think it might be camera related. That being said, I struggled to find this particular bag anywhere else and I'm very happy to have it. Thanks very much!
