Description

Jumbo sized shell-shaped sequins, perfect for large crafts (like sequinned mermaid tails!)

These sequins are 47mm wide, and have a shimmering iridescent peacock color coating that turns them many different shades of blue, green, gold, and red in the sunlight. Their base color is opaque dark purple. They have three holes for hand sewing, although you can also sew directly through the sequins by machine. Additional holes can be added with a small scrapbooking hole puncher.

Sequins are sold by weight. An 8oz order contains approximately 256 sequins. It takes approximately 120 sequins to cover one square foot of fabric, so this will cover 2 square feet with extras to replace damaged or lost sequins. It generally takes 3-4 lbs to cover a full tail, more if you will also be covering the fluke.

Other colors and finishes available! Drop me a PM if you need larger quantities or other colors than I currently have on hand. Large orders have a 3-4-week turnaround.

TIPS for making swimmable mermaid tails with these sequins:
- When hand sewing, do not sew sequins on by the top hole only-- the little tab easily snaps off. Use all three holes for securing your sequins.
- Sew sequins to neoprene instead of spandex for durability
- When machine sewing, use a zigzag stitch to prevent creating a single perforation line along the top of the sequins
- When machine sewing, use a very sharp needle (denim or leatherworking) and sew slowly
- Try not to sit on pool edges or drag sequins along pool bottoms; sequins are durable, but too much abrasion will tear through the iridescent coating
- DO NOT LEAVE YOUR TAIL IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT OR IN A HOT CAR FOR HOURS-- the sequins will curl and warp if they get too hot

FAQs

Sizes of tops follow standard US bra sizing.

Here's an old belly dancer trick: with heavily beaded bras, I recommend buying one size larger than your usual cup size. Often the beadwork will make the bra look smaller on you! But buying a size larger will reduce that illusion, and you can add additional stuffing if necessary.
Care of silicone:
Silicone is very durable! But it can get scuffed up on the bottoms and sides of pools, and the heel and ankle regions are particularly vulnerable to wearing because they are stretched when you wear it. Try not to stand on your flukes in the pool if you can help it, particularly if your fluke has paint. A worn region can be touched up with another coat to restore the shine. Contact me for details.

Care of beaded bras:
All beaded bras should be rinsed with cool or lukewarm water after use, and laid flat on a towel to dry. Do not wring! Keep out of direct sunlight whenever possible. If the bra becomes soiled, clean gently with a small amount of Woolite or other gentle cleanser. Do not dry clean.
I accept commissions for tops, fins, and flukes! I'm also happy to bring drawings to life in a fully swimmable version. Do keep in mind that some designs that look awesome on paper may not be suitable for swimming, due to drag or other potential dangers (for example, I will not use long swags of fabric due on garments meant for swimming).

Commissions require a 50% down payment that is NOT refundable if you decide to cancel your order. Payment in full is due before item will be shipped.

Commissioned items can be returned for a full refund within 30 days of delivery if you're not happy with the item, but I will retain the right to resell the returned item to recoup my lost time and materials (even if it's based on your design).
Is this a gift? Let me know and I will swaddle it prettily in fancy tissue paper, with a handwritten note. I'll throw in a reusable cloth carrying bag for a small extra fee; just let me know.
Treat your sequinned items gently! The big seashell sequins I use are more durable than most standard sequins, but they can still break with age and rough wear. Occasionally the iridescent coating may peel off as well. Every purchase comes with a small number of replacement sequins for normal wear and tear. Gently cut off the broken sequin and either sew or glue a replacement into place, and you're good to go!
Buyers outside of the US: please be aware that tariffs and import taxes may apply to your order. I cannot predict these nor can I charge you for them up front. The buyer is responsible for all such fees once your package reaches your country.

I make every effort to produce items in a timely manner, but please be aware that silicone can be a finicky product, particularly in a humid summer. I will always be up front about the status of your order if you ask me. Made-to-order items may take up to four weeks for completion. Ready-to-ship items will generally ship within 3-5 business days.

If you have a deadline, please let me know about it before you make your order. I don't charge extra for rush orders if items are small.
