Handmade item

This pendant features two gemstones: a faceted amethyst and a crystal of natural golden clinozoisite. The amethyst measures 4.9 mm in diameter and weighs in at 0.48 carats, and the raw clinozoisite measures 0.77 x 0.20 inches ( 19.7 x 5.1 mm) and weighs in at 2.1 ct. They are set together in sterling silver.

The top stone is a faceted amethyst. Quartz is one of the most familiar of minerals. Its most common varieties, colorless rock crystal and white opaque milky quartz are well known as common rocks found in most parts of the world. It can also form a very wide variety of gem materials. Purple amethyst is probably the most famous, and has been highly valued throughout history, and at one point was even considered a precious gem like emeralds or rubies. It was thought in antiquity to counteract drunkenness, and was thus favored for drinking glasses and also for rings worn by clergy through the middle ages. In color it ranges from pale purple or purple-pink all the way to near-black in darkness. This one is a great example, with a rich purple color.

Below it is a crystal of bright golden clinozoisite. Clinozoisite is a mineral that is rarely though of as a gem. A close relative to zoisite (famous for its blue/purple variety, tanzanite) and epidote, it rarely forms gemmy crystals with nice enough color to use as a gem. This stone is a beautiful exception, with a bright golden-orange color. It is a really striking gem crystal, which sparkles like crazy and even has some good dispersion. That, combined with a very beautiful and lustrous crystal form make for a striking stone. It contrasts beautifully with the amethyst above it.
