St. Rose resided in Lima, Peru. She was born "Isabel", but one day her mother, looking at her infant daughter sleeping, thought the baby's face looked like a beautiful rose and the name stuck.

The family was large and struggled financially. Rose was so beautiful everyone hoped she would marry well and help them out.

Rose had other ideas. Really.....unpleasant...ideas. Wishing to remain chaste she did things like rub pepper and lye into her skin to ruin her complexion to keep suitors away and so that she herself wouldn't succumb to vanity.

And that's just the tip of the Rose iceberg. She spent her life punishing herself physically in gruesome (the church calls it 'austerity') ways, like wearing a metal crown of thorns and sleeping on glass.

Since she didn't marry her family into wealth, she supported them and the poor of Lima with her fabulously beautiful embroidery and lace.

She had her brother built her a little grotto in the family garden and moved there, living the life of a hermit in her own back yard, even after she became a Dominican nun.

St. Rose of Lima is the patron saint: against vanity, of embroiderers, florists, gardeners and needle workers.

Hand painted St. Rose medal on bright yellow ball chain measures 23".
