In Montessori primary classrooms, children as young as 4 or 5-years-old may receive lessons in the functions of parts of speech. I this designed this Adverb Box as part of a series in a child's first introduction to grammar, appropriate for lessons within a Montessori Primary or Lower Elementary classroom or your home. Even very young children are curious about our language and the function of words; this lessons capitalizes upon a child's sensitive period for language-acquisition.

Maria Montessori, a pioneer in early childhood education, associated different shapes with each of the parts of speech. Nouns (persons, places, or things) are conceptualized as black, stable pyramids; while verbs (actions) are conceptualized as red, active balls. In two-dimensional form, a noun is a black triangle, and a verb is a red circle. All words that modify a noun are also triangles; for example, an adjective is a medium-sized, medium-blue triangle, while an article is a small, light-blue triangle. Likewise, adverbs are small, orange circles. Preposition, which link two nouns together, are upside-down green moons.

In the classroom, I traditionally follow the lesson on nouns with a lesson on verbs. Adverbs can then follow along with the other parts of speech.

Included in this set:
Paper-board Box with a Painted Orange Top;
10 Laminated Cards (including 5 examples of verbs and 5 examples of adverbs);
5 Red Felt Circles (that label each verb included);
5 Orange Felt Circles (that label each adverb included)

Please note: Materials are an original design and cannot be reproduced for sale.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: THE TAGS ARE NOW UN-LAMINATED. I WOULD SUGGEST LAMINATING THEM BEFORE BEING USED HEAVILY IN THE CLASSROOM! BECAUSE I LOST MY SUPPLIER FOR WOODEN BOXES, THE BOX THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE WILL DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE PICTURES. IT WILL BE A PAPER-BOARD ROUND BOX WITH A REMOVABLE LID. :)
