A vintage atomic Snack Set mixing a Salem Tricorne Platter, Plate & 2 Streamline Cups in rare, custom card suit design with a Creamsicle/Platinum Plate and 2 Saucers. The symbols from the 4 playing card suits—diamond, spade, heart, & club—are handpainted and accented by a central black octagon, and a single orange ring. The Creamsicle / Platinum ringed pieces are simply that, all very Art Deco!

Both patterns are rare, but the handpainted card suit pieces answer the question, "What to do after a night of gambling, drink and dance in post-WWII Pittsburgh?" Why, hit the landmark Donahoe's Cafeteria and Market to shop, eat breakfast & flirt with your big-haired waitress, of course! While it's true the Salem China Co. sometimes made custom restaurant ware, but this popular Art Deco set was probably designed as an in-store premium or giveaway.

Platter measures 11.5 inches [29cm] from corner to corner and the bottom reads “TRICORNE BY SALEM U.S. PATENT #94245, in platinum ink.

Condition is Excellent to Pretty Good: the custom pieces are most likely from a test lot; there is little evidence of use, but there is some slight discoloration and paint errors, plus the expected crazing (crackling effect of the clear overglaze) and a small chip under the rim of the platter. See photos for more details; more available upon request.

:: Care & Handling ::
As with any china this fragile, and with metallic embellishment, this set should not be used in microwaves, and we strongly recommend hand washing. Where there is surface crazing, avoid staining by restricting contact with acidic or deeply colored liquids & foods (strong coffee, beets, etc). Although it is tempting to stack the cups one on top of another, please don’t – it will quickly wear down the glaze on the handles.

PLEASE NOTE: Vintage and antique dinnerware were often decorated with glazes containing varying degrees of lead, a toxic chemical. If you have a concern, please research before purchasing. To minimize exposure to lead when using vintage dinnerware, please observe the following precautions: use infrequently; do not expose to high heat, including microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers; avoid contact with acidic foods & liquids, especially if cracked or crazed (slight crackling of the clear overglaze); do not use to store food or liquids; wash by hand soon after use and allow to air dry.

:: Salem Tricorne • Salem Streamline ::
In the 1930s, the Salem (Ohio) China Company produced a series of futuristic, atomic dinnerware shapes designed by Don Schreckengost, F.H. Sebring, Jr., Herbert Smith & Vincent Broomhall, known as Tricorne and Streamline (Don's brother Viktor Schreckengost was rumored to have had a part in their design as well). These shapes exploded into the well-ordered design world with their Jetson-like conical cups, bowls with sharply angular handles, and gorgeously atomic triangular plates.

Mandarin orange is the most commonly available of Salem’s variety of designs and colors, which include other solids like yellow, green, & blue; streamlines of platinum, orange, aqua, and gold; and decal images like sailing ships, petit point figures, art deco floral swags, polo players & their ponies…we find more every day!

It’s our intention to provide the most comprehensive collection of this unique 1930s dinnerware available online, so for more fantastic Tricorne • Streamline dishes, see our Atomic Salem China section:
