Antique silver brooch featuring Lapiths and Centaurs, probably originating from a Continental grand Tour and dating to around 1900 - 19010. This particular scene is taken from the ancient carving of the battle between the Lapiths and the Centaurs that once stood as the Pediment at the Temple of Zeus, Olympia. The silversmith has added detail missing in the ancient sculpture but the basic elements are the same.

The battle is one of the great Greek legends and supposedly happened when King Pirithous of the Lapiths and Hippodameia, invited the Centaurs to his wedding feast. Unable to handle the strong liquor, the centaur Eurytion attempted to steal the bride, which led to the rest of the Centaurs also attempting to carry off other wedding guests. The Lapiths of course fought back and defeated the Centaurs.

The brooch is cast from 800 silver, marked and tested and is in very good condition, with no damage to the detail and a solid pin on the back. A very unusual and rare piece.
