Description

A custom-made dress especially for you in the style of the photos shown. (I will be able to begin your dress now, but please note there will be delays over Christmas.)

Your heart feels like a thousand butterflies trying to escape and you take a deep breath before stepping through the archway...

I love making dresses that are unique to you, so I've decided to create a listing to explain the process and hopefully help you decide if I'm the right person to make the gown for your special occasion. I've tried to be as clear and informative as possible, but if I haven't answered your question here, please send me a message and I'll do my best to help.

Your dress will be made to fit your measurements and in the length and colour or mix of colours of your choice, and in the style of the example photos shown. Please zoom in on these photos so you understand my style of working. (If you like a unique, creative, raw whimsical look, then I'm the right person for you!) I use reclaimed luxury fabrics as much as possible, and will begin with one item and turn it into something else. Here's how the process will work:

- First of all, please check the top line where I update how long till I can start your dress and if there will be any interruptions. (Mid summer and the run up to Halloween are usually busy times.) Please allow about five weeks for me to make your dress, but it will usually be quicker than that.

- If that's all fine, and you're happy with everything else I mention here, please purchase this listing!

- Please let me know your bust, waist and hip measurements. Also the length from the top of your shoulder (where your bra strap sits) to the length you would like the dress. Please also let me know which colour or colours you'd like.

- Your dress will begin with a vintage Indian tunic, so I will now send photos of three or four to choose from. I'll let you know the fabric type and fastening of each one.

*A note about colours: This listing does not include dresses in white. I don't have much of a stash of luxury white fabrics but if you would like a white dress, I am happy to purchase vintage wedding dresses to use the fabric, but I would have to add £100 approx to the cost I'm afraid. I can use some white material in your dress, but it is unlikely to be a luxury fabric unless you purchase that separately (see below).

*Another note about colours: I literally have a room-full of Indian fabrics to use; however there are definite colour trends so depending on your colour preference, there may be more or less tunics to choose from. There is plenty of turquoise, dark pink and red, but less so of pastel or dusky colours. Please remember the fabrics I use are reclaimed and therefore your dress will include a variety of them; so if you ask for a blue dress, you will have a dress with various shades of blue.

*A note about fabric: If there is a particular fabric that you would like me to incorporate but I am unlikely to have in my stash, (a red background with purple spots, for example; or white silk), then I would ask you to choose and purchase that fabric and send it on to me.

*Another note about fabric: I am very happy to include any fabrics that have a special meaning to you. Maybe you'd like your Christening gown or part of your grandmother's wedding veil included? Lovely!

*A note about sleeves: Please assume that your dress will be sleeveless, or possibly with the option of having short sleeves similar to the ones in the example photos. I don't make sleeves myself because I rarely have pieces of matching fabric large enough; plus due to my style of working by draping fabrics onto a mannequin, it is difficult to incorporate a sleeve pattern.

*A note about sizing. The largest setting on my bigger mannequin is UK size 22 (US size 18-20). I am happy to purchase a bigger mannequin, but please allow a bit of extra time for me to do this. Also, Indian tunics aren't usually on the larger size, so your dress would have to be sleeveless, although I can add material to drape from the shoulders.

- We will probably have a couple of messages backwards and forwards. Depending on the tunic you choose, I'll probably ask things like whether you'd like me to keep any of the embellishments if there are any; if there's an accent colour, whether you'd like me to add it elsewhere in the dress; if you'd like me to cut off the sleeves or keep them etc.

- Then it's the hard part: I'm afraid you just have to trust me, and wait! There are no patterns and every dress will be a bit different, so this is why I ask you to check that you like the dresses shown and are happy to leave me to make your dress in a similar style.

*If you'd like, I can send a photo half way through and/or when it's finished, but please note, the price does not allow for changes (changes take a lot of time - that is why wedding dresses at boutiques cost so much!)

*I often share my work on my You Tube channel and Instagram, so please let me know if you'd like to keep your dress a surprise from other people and I won't upload anything till after the date you wear it.

- I will finish your dress with great care and attention. A custom-made dress is a very special thing and I will invest a lot of myself into your piece. I am honoured that you have chosen me to make your dress and I will work my hardest to make sure you receive a beautiful gown that you love.

- I'll wrap it carefully; say goodbye, and post it to you!

Returns & exchanges

Please check measurements to try to avoid returns. If you are not happy with your item please contact me. I will refund items only if I receive it back within 14 days of receipt and in completely new, unworn condition. If I need to wash or repair, I will deduct an amount to cover this. I only refund the cost of the item, not the cost of postage. Return postage is at your expense and responsibility and I strongly recommend you use registered delivery. Unfortunately if the item is lost in the post on its way back to me, I can't refund you. If you are returning an item from overseas, please be absolutely sure to mark the labels as a return, otherwise I will have to pay customs to receive it back and I will pass this fee onto you.
I'm sorry I can't be more generous with this, but I am a very small business in early stages; I hope you understand.

NB. Exclusions. I don't offer refunds on made-to-order items. ALSO, no refunds on halloween costumes unless I receive it back before September 25th - don't forget to allow 2 weeks for overseas postage. UNLESS the problem is my fault, in which case, of course I'll refund.

Shipping policies

My local post office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. If I receive an order before noon on one of those days, I will most likely post that afternoon; if not, it will be the next day possible.
UK postage is sent 2nd class 'to be signed for' delivery.
Overseas shipping is sent with 'International tracked & signed for' for most items; I'm sorry about the cost - I don't make any profit on posting. Parcels to the USA take approximately 5-7 working days, but can be 3 weeks to some parts of the world. I'm sorry, I cannot be more specific than this, I have no control once I've posted it and cannot be accountable for the postage system!
Smaller items are usually sent with regular airmail and may take up to 3 weeks.
There should be no customs costs as I mark packages as 'Gift'; however if customs open the parcel and decide customs costs need to be paid, then I'm afraid I can't be responsible for this.
I'm often asked if I can send an item with express shipping. I'm sorry, but tracked and signed for is the fasted posting method we have at a reasonable price. 5 day delivery is about £60.

Additional policies

Occasionally I buy new remnants or organic fabric off a roll when I need large pieces of the same material, however as much as possible I reclaim fabric that has once had a life before, be it recently or from the early Victorian times. This is my small contribution to help the environment and reduce landfill. I never send out anything that I wouldn't be happy to receive and I really hope you will be completely delighted with your Threads of a Fairytale item. Please note that whilst I do my best to select fabrics that are as good as new, occasionally you may spot signs that it has previously been loved - slight fading for example. I will never use any fabric that spoils the look of the garment, however I may use slightly flawed fabric for lining where it won't show. The savings from not buying new are passed onto you.
All seams are serged/overlocked where appropriate. I sometimes leave edges raw, which means with wear and washing, they may fray slightly. I do this deliberately because I like the effect it makes and believe it adds to the ethereal quality. If I think this will be severe, I run a line of stitching near the edge to prevent the garment fraying away!

Sizing. To allow for the differences in international sizes, I use broader terms like Small, Medium etc. I always give measurements, so please check before purchase. Generally speaking I relate to these UK sizes. (USA sizing is 1 - 2 sizes smaller.)
Extra Small: 4 - 6
Small: 8 - 10
Medium: 12 - 14
Large: 16 - 18
Extra large: 20
(NB This is different to many brands. Eg. surf brands often have size 14 as extra large!)

Care advice. Hand washing will no doubt help all garments last longer, however our lives are usually busy ones, and as long as the fabric allows, several things I make should be up to machine washing on a delicate cycle at 30 degrees C. If your machine doesn't have those options, please hand wash to be on the safe side. If there are any special instructions that differ from this, I will mention so in the listing description eg. I'm afraid silk items will have to be hand washed and more and more I'm using beading, sequins and delicate vintage fabrics which aren't suitable to go in the machine.

Special notes about the Indian Summer Collection - please read.
This collection is made from upcycling and recycling traditional handmade Indian clothing, mainly in silk, but also chiffon and cotton. I hand-washed all of it first and discovered that some of the items were not colour-fast, so please bare that in mind. I personally like the effect of colour-run, but if you don't, please dry clean, particularly if the garment contains different colours. These items aren’t machine washable - only hand wash or dry clean. It’s worth it - the fabrics and detailing are just gorgeous.

International differences. Please remember I am in the UK and there is often a time difference - we're 6 - 9 hours ahead of America depending on area and time of year. Therefore, please be patient with your questions as I may be getting ready for bed when you ask something and unlikely to reply till the next day!
There are also differences in phrases or names of things. If you're not sure of something please ask. (Eg. your pants are our trousers; our pants are your knickers; your vests are our waistcoats, your tank tops are our vests, and I won't tell you what your fanny packs are!)
Likewise, I do know how to spell! Words like colour, jewellery, customise etc. are correct English spelling in the UK!
