Description

This note card is 5" X 7". It is a photograph of my original artwork. I make quilts with words and symbols pieced into the design. The quilt itself is 49" L X 31" W and is machine pieced and machine quilted. I work in 100% cotton fabrics exclusively.

Description on the back of the Note Card:
Come Into the Light
Quilt Size: 49” L X 31” W
My daughter and I were in a semi-lit room when she asked me to take a splinter out of her hand. I started to do so, but she stopped me in my tracks with the comment, "Come into the light." Her words were so wise - for so many situations in life - that I made a quilt to remember them! Let the sun shine in!

NOTE: When you preview the card, you may have to ZOOM in on the back of the card to see the words in crystal clear fashion.

My quilt images are printed on cards from the Neenah Paper Company's Royal Sundance line. They have a felt finish and the paper is Green Seal™ Certified. The envelopes are also from the Neenah Paper Company and they are from the Environment Envelope line.

Here is the larger story behind my quilts:
After twenty-one years of marriage, I divorced in 1994. Having been a stay at home mom for all those years I needed a job thus I decided to turn my hobby of quilt making into a paid profession, thinking I would go out on the quilt lecture circuit. There was a problem with my plan, however. Though I am a very fine quilt designer and technician, I am not the world's greatest quilt artist, so how would I compete with better quilters targeting the same audience? My solution was to make quilts with words and symbols pieced into the design - because no one else was making such quilts - and therefore I could stand alone in my field. With this concept in mind I started to make my wordy quilts. It was only after I was finished with the first dozen quilts that I realized my quilted words were generic and could be appreciated by anyone, not just quilt makers. Thus, instead of calling myself a Quilt Lecturer, I labeled myself a Motivational Speaker and began to market my talk to every sort of group from PTAs to Procter & Gamble, with a quilt guild thrown in every now and again for good measure. In ten years of public speaking I addressed 260 audiences in 11 states. I also had the good fortune of attracting Pelican Publishing Company to my door. Ultimately, they published three books of my work. The first two books are adult picture books that are illustrated with my artwork, you guessed it, quilts with words and symbols pieced into the design! Check them out: With This Ring I Journey tells the story of the journey to self-acceptance and love. Get Quiet and Listen tells the story of having the courage to say YES to life.
