Description

When I started making upcycled denim totes, I quickly learned that most of the fronts of the jeans are worn and don't lend themselves well to a sharp-looking finished tote. So, I have used the backs of a LOT of jeans, leaving me with the fronts to recycle differently.

Reaching back into my distant past, I recalled having made denim blankets from my kids' old blue jeans. We're not talking fancy, schmancy quilts here, but honest-to-goodness durable recycled denim utility blankets. For example, our 30+ year old denim blanket was our favorite beach blanket because the sand didn't stick to it. It has also been used as a tent floor cover for our (few) camping expeditions, as a picnic blanket, as a late night, catch-the-popcorn movie blanket, as a moving blanket to protect our furniture and I have thrown it over the holly bushes to protect my legs from getting poked as I washed the outside windows. As the kids have gotten married, I've made one for each of them and in addition to the above they have used it to cover wood piles, as a drop cloth when they work on their cars (don't they know how much WORK these things are?). I suspect it would even protect the car from hail damage!

So that explains the larger size blanket creation. But recently, my granddaughter asked if I had a picnic blanket she could use for her imaginary picnic. Of course! Uh, wait . . . nope. What? I have denim galore and I didn't have a junior size blanket that wouldn't fill the living room? Time to downsize just a bit and cater to the kiddos! So, ta da! A junior picnic/utility blanket is now available. I have an older friend who says the smaller size suits her better too.

These blankets aren't lined, but the seams are finished so they won't ravel or fray. They measure approximately 48 inches (121.9 cm) x 56 (142.24 cm) inches (think a little bit wider than beach towel size). Each blanket is made from 4 inch (10.16 cm) squares in a roughly light/dark, dark/light pattern. Let the picnic begin!
