Description

54-40 or Fight Quilt of pieced blocks in assorted cotton prints separated by blocks of solid medium blue cotton is hand quilted in tiny, even stitches with diagonal grids and straight lines inside the pieced blocks and with ornate feathered wreaths inside the solid blue alternating ground. The hand quilting is absolutely gorgeous. The quilt measures 68 inches by 76 inches and was probably made in the 1940s or 1950s. The back is a solid dark blue cotton. The separately applied binding is a narrow band of solid dark blue. The inner batting is a medium-thin layer of cotton. The quilt is in sturdy condition and would easily withstand hard use in a child's room. There is some toning of the blue fabric and the color is not totally uniform across the surface of the quilt, but the fabric itself is not weakened and there are no tears or holes. This pattern is also known as Granny's Square.

The first photo is taken outside in natural light. The pieced blocks are constructed from a nice variety of prints in assorted colors. Each pieced block alternates with a square of solid medium blue. There is dense hand quilting across the entire quilt. The second photo shows the quilt on a full size bed. The third photo shows a closer view of a portion of the quilt. I have tried to highlight the different tones of the blue. The fourth photo shows one of the pieced blocks. The blocks are each constructed of two different fabrics set on a white ground, and the fabrics are all very crisp and bright. The fifth photo shows the beautiful hand quilting on one of the solid blue squares. These feathered wreaths are found in all of the blue alternating blocks. The sixth photo shows the quilt folded to show the dark blue back. The dense hand quilting shows up nicely. The seventh photo shows a minor flaw in one of the pieced blocks. There is a brown "smudge" that is about one inch by a quarter inch. There is another similar smudge in one of the other blocks. Neither of the flaws are dark. In this photo you can also see the dark blue binding and another view of the back.
