Description

I was saving this one for myself but it was spending it's life in a box so I decided it was time to set it free. This is a Coach Brief Bag made in the Coach Factory in New York City sometime during the late 70's to the early 80's in excellent condition. The Coach creed verifies the bag was made in New York City and has registration number 417-3910 stamped on it. You won't find many of these around in this condition.

I believe the color of this bag to be what Coach called 'tabac' but I have been told I'm color challenged so I have included a color chart in the collage at photo 5 including all of the colors Coach used in the early 80's so you can decide whether I'm right about the color.

This is a medium sized bag with room for your laptop, files and accessories. It has a flap over cover with dual brass turnlock closures. There are two pockets under the flap large enough for your smart phone, keys and typical accessories you may need for your daily business. The inside compartment is large enough for a laptop and some files. There is also a full length zipper pocket at the rear of the inside compartment where you can store additional papers or files. The bag has a leather top handle and was designed without a strap.

I have the Coach catalog listing for this bag from their 1983 catalog and this is what they had to say about the Brief Bag back then:

No. 5080 Brief Bag .. $156 [ $385.90 in 2017 dollars]

Soft luxurious legal sized briefcase serves personal and professional needs of both men and women. Gusseted pockets on the outside; zippered compartment on the inside. Mocha, British Tan, Black, Red, Burgundy, Tabac. Dimensions: 16" x 11" x 2".

Dimensions:

Length: 16 inches
Height: 11 inches
Width: 2 inches

Condition:

This bag is in excellent used condition. It has no rips, tears or holes, All hardware functions properly. It is structurally sound. It has its original Coach hang tag. While there is some minor scuffing it is very light and difficult to see. There is a very very light fade line that appears when you open the flap and look at the front but it is difficult to see as well. Please see photos for best depiction of condition and ask for more if you need them.

THE FACTORY

This bag was made in the Coach Factory which means it is in the class of the most sought after vintage Coach bags. The Factory was in New York City. Coach no longer produces bags in the U.S.A. and the Factory is long gone. The quality of the bags manufactured at the Coach NYC factory and the skills its leather workers who produced them was memorialized in a book released in 1977 entitled "The Factory". It is a testimonial to the skill and diversity of the Coach leather workers. Here are some excerpts from 'The Factory':

"The factory occupies two floors of a 12 story building in downtown New York City and employs about 125 members of the Pocketbook and Novelty Workers Union Local No. 1 AFL-CIO. It is the Coach Leatherware factory, and the people who work here make bags and belts out of leather and brass.

**********************************************************************************
Looking around the factory, out of town visitors are always struck by its rich ethnic mix. Like a microcosm of the City itself, every race, creed and national origin seems to be represented. In addition to 2nd generation New Yorkers, both black and white, there are Italians and those of Italian descent, Poles and those of Polish descent; likewise, Germans, Hungarians, Lithuanians, and Russians - as well as Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and a number of other Hispanics from Central and South America.

***********************************************************************************
Here in New York City we have recruited workers from what is undoubtedly the world's largest pool of skilled labor, and this has enabled us, over the years, to choose from the best in each category.

************************************************************************************
"The leather goods industry is a highly competitive one. If Coach bags and belts have enjoyed a certain success in this field, it is precisely because they are made in New York City by those people whose skill, energy and quick intelligence make it possible to turn out a quality product at a fair price. [ The Factory: Portrait of a Leathergoods Factory in Downtown New York City; Pictures by Jeremy Lezin- Words by Miles Cahn; July 1977]

If you prefer a different style vintage bag, I have many in stock and you can see it at my shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/ProVintageGear

This is a beautiful item in excellent condition. I have the tan version of this briefcase that I have carried across all of the US and Canada for 17 years. NOTHING performs like a Hartmann. My 17 year old briefcase is still going strong but this addition will carry me into the next millennium. It's THAT good. Nothing says style and class like a high quality leather briefcase. Every serious business man or woman should have one. This is the shop to get what you need. None better.. I highly recommend. P.S. backpacks are for sleep overs or camping trips. Don't be "That Guy"... :)

small and delicate, but the picture is gorgeous. It almost looks like Attis is driving Mother's chariot. I like to keep some antique roman coins in it at the moment.

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost.
