Description

Byron
Elizabeth Longford
1986
Hutchinson of London
Burgundy brown cloth boards with gilt to spine. Pictorial dust jacket with picture of Byron in 1814 by Thomas Phillips from the Newstead Abbey collections.
Contains 16 pages of black and white illustrations.
Lord Byron was one of the most famous and contradictory figures in English literature. He was radical, courageous, handsome, witty and indubitably a genius. He was also violent, petty, cruel and flagrantly amoral.
'Mad, bad and dangerous to know' was the celebrated judgment of Lady Caroline Lamb, and contemporary society recoiled at the aura of orgies, incest and mysterious hidden evil which surrounded him. After his death it was the nationalist liberator and the melancholy beauty of the poet which influenced subsequent generations and gave rise to the legendary of the Byronic hero: in his own day the judgements were more devastating.
This book disentangle truths from legends and traces the shifts in Byron's kaleidoscopic personality. It describes his travels in Europe and the East, his friendships - with Hobhouse, Shelley and others - and his many love affairs, most scandalous of all that with his half sister Augusta. It always returns to Byron's isolation, loneliness and ultimate death in exile.
The Countess of Longford was a member of the Advisory Council of the Victoria and Albert museum and a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.
