This is a very attractive plate that has been in the family since the 1930's.

White earthenware, moulded, decorated with coloured transfer prints under a slightly blue-green, finely crazed glaze. Blue, yellow and red with a brown key plate. Circular with a sloping rim and flat central area. 'The Truant', after Going to School by Thomas Webster, R.A., inscribed 'T. Webster 1834'. Encircled by a narrow border of conjoined bell flowers; outer oak leaf and acorn border on a grey-green ground. On the base, printed in brown 'THE TRUANT/BY/T WEBSTER'.

Prattware Plate by F. & R. Pratt & Co., factory, England, Staffordshire

Engraving after original painting by T. Webster illustrated in Art Journal for 1849, p. 322, though painting first exhibited in 1836. Engraved by T. Phillibrown. Thomas Webster, British artist, 1800-1886.
