This pendant features two gems: a Tanzanian star sunstone and a crystal of Mexican topaz. The sunstone measures 10.2 x 9.1 mm and weighs in at 8.6 carats The topaz measures 1.20 x 0.54 inches (30.6 x 13.9 mm), and weighs in at 29.9 carats.

The top stone is a tanzanian star sunstone. Sunstone is a name that applies to any feldspar given a reflective sheen by oriented inclusions. While the most famous variety is the material from Oregon which contains micro platelets of real copper, Tanzania also produces a really phenomenal kind colored by inclusions of reflective hematite. Hematite is silver-black in normal specimens, but when it forms as extremely thin platelets it can show this incredibly rich, coppery color. At their best these stones show just incredible sheen, which I think beats even the best schiller sunstones from Oregon (and I love Oregon material!)

This stone is a beautiful star sunstone, showing a 4-rayed star in addition to its golden sheen. These gems are just unbeatable for their brilliance and beauty

Below it is a crystal of Mexican rutilated topaz. Topaz is a gem which was not well known or acknowledged until relatively recent times. Though the term 'topaz' has a long history, it was used to refer to any yellow stone in antiquity, most commonly yellow-green peridot. Thankfully, the stone has finally gotten the acknowledgment it deserves. It is a hard, sparkling gem which comes in a wide range of beautiful colors.

This is a particularly odd variety of topaz, which is only found in Mexico and in some parts of utah. These stones are included with clouds of thin needles of the mineral rutile. While the interior of the stone is colorless, the fine needles can tint it with a wide range of colors. In this case, the silk is concentrated around the edges, giving it splashes of red color.
