Description

There is no other book like this one.

Or, you'd be hard-pressed to find it. This copy is not only a rare 1905 first edition of the beloved classic tale A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, but it has what I like to call "battle-scars," small details that tell of its provenance or history through time from its publication to now. This one was clearly well-loved and well-read by many others, or maybe just one person--a little girl perhaps--who read and re-read the story till the binding nearly cracked.

The book is worn but readable and durable, not falling apart or anything, but someone at some point had to tape together the wax sheet protecting the frontispiece illustration from the title-page, something that like many dust jackets is one of the first things to deteriorate in a book and fall away--but this one is there in its mended glory, still. Someone also reinforced the binding at the title page of certain middle chapters with tape to ensure the pages wouldn't come undone. Other than that, there is no telling of its history--only that it was once cared for by someone who, well, really CARED.

And I know the future owner of this book will care just as much, age spots and all. This is a beautiful relic of historic literature and a reminder of why old books are important, meaningful, timeless.

And here's the straight information you may be looking for:

-Full title: A Little Princess, Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Told for the First Time
-Author: Frances Hodgson Burnett (noted here as "Author of 'Little Lord Fauntleroy")
-Illustrator: Harold Piffard
-Format: First Edition, hardcover with gilded title and decoration on cover and spine, engraved-border around the center paste-down of a color illustration of protagonist with her doll. Wax sheet inside separating glossed full color frontispiece from title page. Color illustrations throughout. Green boards, uncut pages, orange and cream patterned endpapers.
-Condition: Fragile but wonderful! :)
-Publisher: Frederick Warne and Co., Bedford Street, Strand: London
-Copyright: "Entered at Stationer's Hall" (This is interesting because it literally just says Copyright, then underneath Entered at Stationer's Hall -- no date, no name or company name, so weird! On the bottom front however under the publisher's name it says "All Rights Reserved" so we can assume the publisher was the copyright holder and not Burnett herself).
-Date published: 1905
-Provenance: This one I found online as a customer saw my listing for the Reginald Birch edition of A Little Princess and wanted it but it was already sold. She told me how much her daughter loved the story and would love a first edition and so I was immediately on the hunt. I found it a few times for extreme prices that I couldn't afford unless the customer was willing to pay that and more, and eventually I found one on a bookselling website that was reasonably priced for both me and the buyer to agree on :) This was July 2017 -- the book was on hold for the customer but the sale fell through so I'm now putting it up for anyone who is interested! Excited for the buyer to find it :)
-Pricing: The customer and I came to the price based on what I bought the book for and how much she was willing to pay, given the other first editions out there were/are all much more money. Good old negotiation, that's my favorite way to price -- keeping customers happy 24/7! I stayed with this price when I took it off hold.

WOW. Like 5-Star Freakin’ WOW! This is my second time working with “nootherbooklikethis” and I could not recommend her anymore than I already do! Like you may think that I know her and am hyping her up! 100% serious, I do not. This seller has been the best I’ve worked with on Etsy! My book -no- my treasure arrived earlier than expected, it was packaged in a soft wrapping and tied beautifully. I opened it up to inspect the package and I can say it was exactly what was promised. This book is a gift for a friend who will love the book as much as it’s prior owner did. I loved this entire transaction from the start to the end (I’m stealing her description of the book as it’s perfect for my friend, for the card with the book). So in all seriousness, this seller is amazing and you will love working with her. To the seller-Thank you.

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
