Materials

Silhouette Picture, Silhouette Cutout, Reliable Newark NJ, Reliable Company, Reliable Silhouette, Black and White Silhouette, Art on Paper, Vintage Silhouette, Minuteman, Minutemen Silhouette, Revolutionary War Silhouette, Mid Century Silhouette, 1950s Silhouette

This is a vintage picture of the silhouette of a minuteman, probably from the Revolutionary War. Minutemen were civilians who organized to form well-prepared militia companies and who were self-trained in weaponry, tactics, and military strategies. They got their name, because they were known to be ready at a “minute’s notice”. This artwork is marked on the back 'Product of Reliable', 'Newark, N.J.', and 'Minutemen'. I did not open the back of the frame and, therefore, cannot determine if this is a black paper silhouette cutout (and original work of art) or a print. Reliable was known to import original works of art, such as lithographs and paintings. In the middle of the 20th Century (and especially in the 1950s), the art was created by various European artists, imported by Reliable, and sold in U.S. department stores such as Macy’s. I read somewhere (although I cannot recall where) that Reliable may have still been open in the 1970s. It is not operating today.

This framed piece of art is 8 1/2 inches (wide) by 12 1/2 inches (high).

This item is in good vintage condition. There are a few light ‘smudge’ marks, which do not appear to me to be on the actual artwork, on the inside of the glass. There are also a few light yellow areas on the white paper. The thin black frame has some wear on two of its corners.
