Description

Original painting sold with frame (Wood)
Material : Acrylic on wooden panel
Dated and Signed on bottom right

About the painting

Using acrylic paint as his medium, Calvin pours layers of paint and lets them flow on wooden panels. He imagines nebula and gemstones forming in his paintings as the paint dries, condensing a billion years of history in the simulation process. Calvin also applies some colors using the airbrush. By using the transparency of the acrylic medium, he pursues a new kind of spatial depth in his paintings.

About the artist

Calvin Chak (Chak Chun Lam) was born in Hong Kong in the 1980s. He has a degree in engineering from CUHK and a diploma in fine art from CUSCS.

Since he was a teenager, Calvin has loved reading books on science and astronomy. He is attracted by the beautiful space images taken by the Hubble Space telescope and the strange world under the microscope. He is also inspired by the stories and the dedication of great scientists such as Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Their scientific discoveries, such as the laws of gravitation and relativity, have had a huge impact on humanity.

Although he has not been able to fulfill his dream to be a scientist, Calvin expresses his feeling of wonder and awe towards science and astronomy through his artworks. As his subjects, he chooses nebula and gemstones, formed millions or even billions of years ago. For Calvin these are symbols of timeless beauty. Like nebula and gemstones, scientific discoveries also have an inner beauty that transcends generations and crosses cultural boundaries.
