Description

Art Deco glamor and the elegance of Japanese design make this brooch a treat of pure sophistication.

Shaped as the Japanese kanji for “happiness,” the body of the piece is solid sterling silver. The surface is etched with a graceful trillium design, creating facets to catch the light and add dimension. This is definitely one of those pieces that asks for a high shine, in keeping with the glamor of the era.

The trillium-happiness brooch was artisan crafted in Japan and found its way to us from the mid to late 1940s, possibly as a sweetheart piece commissioned by an American soldier during reconstruction. Prior to that time, jewelry such as finger rings or brooches would have been very unusual since there was so little demand for it within Japanese society.

The back of the pin is marked Sterling 950 and it weighs 5 grams. The use of finer quality silver and the 950 mark are both typical of Japan in the years immediately following World War II.

The design measures approximately 35 mm from top to bottom and 30 mm parallel to the clasp. The clasp is original with no signs of misuse or repair.

This type of safety clasp has a section which pulls out, allowing the point of the pin to enter it's housing. When the end is pushed back in, the pin is secured. The moving portion of the clasp housing was a little bit stiff, so the exposed mechanism has been cleaned. Continued use will allow for smoother motion as you continue to enjoy the brooch.

**Our fine jewelry is always boxed for shipping.**
