Description

Letterpress printed book of short stories from Svalbard.

Contains 6 stories, all hand typeset and printed on my Adana 8x5 press. 3 photographs, hand-printed in a darkroom, (2 colour, 1 black and white). Japanese stab binding.

As the books are letterpressed, there are imperfections in the text. But this makes them unique.

Each book is numbered, as part of a small run of 36 books in total.

The stories are my own fiction, not published anywhere else. They were written in Longyearbyen, inspired by the island and its inhabitants in the sunless arctic winter.

“If you die here you die in your own red blood” says Bjorn the taxi driver, glancing into his rear view mirror for a reaction, and I smile at him. I know he is only trying to spook my tourists because I’m new, but I won’t give him the satisfaction of seeing me annoyed. “Nobody in Longyearbyen dies of old age.” he elaborates. He’s perfect for this, half santa and half troll. He tells the groups stories that are a mixture of history, lore and his own invention, always with a good measure of death thrown in. They tip him for the gore. Then they get uneasy when they have to follow me into the dark, and I have a harder time encouraging them on. Bjorn takes the presence of death and makes its teeth more fantastical, I then lull them into believing my gun will keep it at bay. But I am not lulled yet myself. I still always make sure it’s loaded.
