Tendon

Tendons mediate the attachment of skeletal muscle to bone. Tendons thus play a very important role with respect to musculoskeletal movements. When a skeletal muscle contracts (shortens) it pulls on the tendon, which in turn pulls on the bone and the bone moves. Tendons are made up of parallel bundles of collagen fibers that are readily apparent in this image. The collagen fibers of tendons are relatively inelastic (they don’t stretch) and are extremely strong. Too much tension on a tendon can chip the bone surface to which it is attached.
