Prostate

The prostate is an accessory male reproductive tract gland that secretes a slightly alkaline fluid and accounts for approximately 30% of the volume of semen during ejaculation. As men age the prostate gland tends to undergo significant changes including the development of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) which can lead to difficulties in urination. In addition, prostatic cancer is one of the most common types of cancers that occur in men. Prostatic concretions also trend to accumulate in the prostate as men age but the significance of these concretions is not clear. One of these concretions can be seen in the picture. The prostate also releases prostate specific antigen (PSA). Levels of PSA can be monitored and increasing PSA levels may be an indicator of prostatic cancer developing.
