Description

Deschutes Jasper, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA

The Biggs deposits and the Deschutes deposits are only about twelve miles apart and only an experienced collector can confidently decide the source of some of these specimens. Hans Gamma has that sort of expertise and he has helped me improve but I still run into specimens where I need his help.

From the point of view of a cabochon cutter I would divide the material from either location into scenic, where everyone could agree which side was up, and the abstract pieces such as this that do not suggest a picture of a scene.

If you see a picture in a slab the problem is that the image can change when just a fraction of a millimeter is ground away. This is why most of the people who cut landscape stones cut their slabs around 3 mm and then cut very low dome cabs so that the image they saw in the slab is not lost.

I bought this piece of rough about 30 years ago from Judy Elkins with the intention of making one or two cabs but it is also wonderful as is. There is a saw mark on the polished face so as a specimen slab it should be repolished.

This is a gorgeous slab that is very different from my other Dryhead specimens with its large band of translucency. Great to hold up to the light! A nice full face slab with great pinks and contrasts with the delicate darker fortification bands. Thanks for great specimens.

A beautiful slab of Dead Camel Jasper with a lot of nice colors in great broken patterns. Really, really nice and already on display.
