Description

There is no other book like this one.

There are many different editions, but this one stands alone! Imagine my excitement when I found this out, that there is none to compare with this one, aside from the other amazing copy (completely different) I also have for sale of the book.

What can I say, I pick this book up whenever I see it, the story is so compellingly romantic... *sighs*

What was I saying? Oh, this edition. You'll find out more reasons why it is incomparable and should be bought and coveted and shown to everyone you know--when I finish the description, that is. For now, just ogle at the pictures and trust me that you will be buying a masterpiece of pure art, literary and visual, if you buy this book.

And here are the straight details you may be looking for:

-Full title: Aucassin and Nicolette
-Author: Unknown/unstated
-Translator: Eugene Mason
-Original Language: French
-Language: English
-Illustrator: Maxwell Armfield
-Format: Rare/singular edition, illustrated in full color on glossed pages throughout, rest of pages matte, frontispiece protected from title page by thin wax sheet, hardcover, front cover and spine ivory with medieval, shining gilt font for title, detailed design engraved on front in gold and inked in blue as border along with flowers and other line-symbols, squares, leaves, etc. On front first page in bottom left binding corner there is a stamped old paper sticker with an illustration of the gates of Harvard University with the name of the bookshop it was originally sold at, Gardenside Bookshop, and its address, located in Boston Massachusetts.
-Condition: Near mint! I seriously cannot find anything in this edition that would tell you of its age, hardly even any wear at the corners/edges of the boards--the only place would be the tiny faint age-spots on the wax sheet separating the title page from the frontispiece, and the rest is spotless!
-Publisher: London: J M Dent & Sons, Ltd. New York: EP Dutton & Co.
-Copyright: "All rights reserved" - research indicates it was printed in the United States by E P Dutton & Co, so they hold the copyright from 1910, its publication date
-Date published: 1910
-Provenance: I found this one at a bookstore in Connecticut during the Summer of 2017 when I was having a terrible day and spent way too much money at this bookstore. Surprisingly, I didn't find it while I lived in Boston (note the Gardenside Bookshop) and I've no idea how it made its way to Connecticut, but it's kind of funny that I moved to Connecticut and the book, it seems, followed me. :) No signature to indicate who owned it but the Gardenside Bookshop in Boston was the first bookseller to distribute this copy in 1910 when it was debuted, as their book sticker is included in a deliberate and not haphazard way, indicating that specific bookseller was not a reseller. This is not stated, however, so this is a guess based on my research.
-Pricing: I priced this book based on the fact it is one of those rare books you find that is so rare you can't find it anywhere else (at least, the ones I did find, and there were only a few, did not have pictures or details with them, which I discount entirely because who would buy a book you couldn't see or know anything about? Crazy! No idea on the conditions of those and almost no information came with them, and mostly I found other copies not the same as this one, so I had work ahead of me to try and price it--also, any copy I could find that had been sold previously, of which there were two, were no longer available, so that didn't help me). I did my research, and in the end I had to price it based on the prices of other editions, rather than the fragments I could find of this one, which I don't like to do because they have no bearing on the worth of this specific copy, but I had nowhere else to gauge its general price point from. I know, however, that the book is AT LEAST worth what I priced it at, so there's no ambiguity there :)

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
