Description

Hello:

This is a Hemingray 43 Telegraph glass insulator in the beautiful aqua color. This insulator was made between the 1900’s to 1920’s, in the USA. The purpose of this insulator was to keep electricity from leaking out of the wires and into the poles. There are many designs for such insulators. This one is embossed with # 43, a modified form of CD 152, # 40. It has a “saddle groove” on the top, and it has round drip points on the bottom. It is sometimes described as a “Hoop Skirt”, because there was an inner and outer layer making up the bottom part of the insulator. The trade name was “Top Groove Western Union.” The bottom of the glass is embossed with “Hemingray 43, and Made in U.S.A.”

This insulator is 4 ¼ inches tall, and 3 5/8 inches wide. The color is officially called aqua, but sometimes it was called Teal Green. Insulators were also used for telephone lines, but those were often made of a ceramic material.

The glass is in vintage condition. There are some cracks that do not extend to the other side of the glass. Overall appearance is very good.

The Hemingray Company was established in 1848 by Ralph Gray. They had production facilities in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Production ended in 1966.

This aqua color saddle grove, hoop skirt insulator seems to be a rather rare piece in the marketplace. Some buyers use these to make shades for table or desk lamps. It is certainly heavy enough to act as a paperweight or bookend. Of course, nice for a collection of insulators.
