Description

A buttonhook with a steel shaft and hook marked "ENGLISH MAKE STEEL" with a pressed Sterling Silver handle.

The item was intended to pull buttons, studs or laces through the multiple eyes in leather boots and footwear that was fashionable at that time.

The item has a clear hallmark, (though small) in the embossing of the handle, which has in it
"WJM" over "&Co" into a shield, which can be seen in photo 3.

WJM is the mark of W J Myatt & Co Ltd who traded from 1902 until 1946, and were first registered in 1900

The hallmark establishes that the item was assayed in Birmingham , England in 1909.

The item is in good condition with some small tarnishing on the steel shaft, this could doubtless be removed with wire wool if need be, but is part of the antiquity of the Buttonhook

It is 18 cm (7 ") long, and the widest part of the silver handle is 2 cm (.75 "). The weight is 33 gm
